A lot of people are not aware of how many T-28’s came into the civilian inventory. T-28’s were phased out by the U.S. Navy starting in the later 70’s up through the early 80’s. Those airplanes were phased out and taken to the military storage area at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ. They went through an extensive preservation procedure where all fluids were drained out and preservatives were put into the airplanes. They were then covered with a plastic material called spray-lat to keep the rain and dust out of the aircraft and were ventilated at the bottom so that any moisture that may find its way inside would not condense and cause corrosion. The airplanes were stored at the Davis-Montham Air Force Base up until the mid 80’s when a number of those airplanes were made available to military museums around the country who used them as trade bait to trade for historic airplanes. T-28 s/n 138331 was part of a package with 5 other T-28’traded for a Curtis Jenny to display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. Courtesy Aircraft Sales was contacted by the individual who did the trade and we were subsequently able to purchase 6 T-28’s from this individual who completed the trade with the Smithsonian. After purchasing the airplanes from this individual we contracted with a private company just outside the fence at Davis-Montham AFB to pull the planes off the base and transfer the airplanes into civilian ownership. Those airplanes were towed off the base, extensively inspected for any problems, new batteries installed, all fluids serviced, pre-oiled and run, and landing retractions performed. Airplanes were then towed back onto the base and one by one were removed from the base for test flights to Tuscon International Airport.  S/N 138331 and 3 other airplanes were then flown to Rockford, IL where they were originally certified in the experimental category and subsequently sold to different owners. S/N 138331 is currently listed for sale by Courtesy for its original owner from 1984 and it is currently located in Rockford, IL.
