Summary of Restoration Work completed to date: Paint stripping and minor repair to the fuselage, wings, empennage, and control surfaces Rebuild of one wing assembly (the other still needs to be done) this work includes: Reskin bottom of wing from flak damage Leading edge metal work repair Flaps repaired Replaced ½ of main spar Installed never used 1968 fuel tanks and all associated hoses, fittings, etc. These tanks have been pressure tested. Rebuild of one main gear assembly Replacement of pins, bushings, bolts, etc. (a replacement seal still needs to be sourced) Repainted the gear assembly Miscellaneous Information The other main gear and wing need to have work done on them similar to that which is already been done. The nose gear needs to be rebuilt Control surfaces – flaps, ailerons and elevators were sent to Alamo Aircraft in San Antonio, TX and have been repaired and rebuilt Parts/Engines- Original J-85-17 engines included but without records and therefore not usable. The owner has obtained a pair of GE CJ-610 engines that are included. This is the civil version of the J-85. These engines have been inspected by a repair shop and there was an estimate of $110,000 to return them to service. Major changes included- *Stronger wings.*Three  pylons on each wing.*Larger wingtip fuel tanks of 360 liters (95 US gal) capacity.*A General Electric GAU-2B/A 7.62 mm (0.300 in) “Minigun” Gatling-style machine gun, with   a rate of fire of 3,000 rounds/minute and 1,500 rounds of ammunition. The weapon was fitted in   the right side of the aircraft’s nose. A gunsight and gun camera were also fitted.*Better avionics for battlefield communications, navigation, and targeting.*Tougher landing gear for rough-field operation. *Installation of GE J-85 engines of 2400# thrust History Formerly operated by the US Air Force, the aircraft was given to Vietnamese AF. The aircraft was one of two A-37 aircraft that were illegally imported into the USA via Canada. The aircraft were seized in 1989 by US customs and given to the Wings of Eagles Museum in Elmira NY. After a holding period the Museum was given permission to sell the aircraft. The current owner purchased the aircraft from a museum, and it is now FAA registered.  Customs provided a full release on the aircraft enabling civilian ownership.
